As most children would point out, the idea that complexity required intelligent design falls apart when someone asks where the Designer came from.
The famous "watchmaker" example falls apart because atoms and molecules are not watch parts. I don't know how long you'd have to shake a box of watch parts before you get a watch, but I know how long you have to shake a test tube full of various small molecules to get billions of large, complex molecular chains, all alike, because I've done it.
I am not a biologist, but I'm not entirely ignorant of science, and as yet, I have never seen anything in nature that did not have at least one plausible explanation for its origin. Of course, given hundreds of millions of years to work in, even implausible explanations work out pretty well.
