Gee, how could we ever tell clouds from the surface of the earth?

It's quite easy to distinguish a cloud layer over the surface of the earth vs the surface itself. One of them rotates uniformly and maintains it's "structure", while the other moves around a lot it doesn't rotate uniformly from pole to equator.
