The Nazi concentration camps contained homosexuals as well as Jews, Romany, Communists and other undesireables. Their heads were shaved and numbers were tattooed on their arms. It's a statement. They are already being treated differently; they don't have to "be" different.

Tattoos in the generic sense are prevalent among women about 10 years younger than I am (51), and younger. It's not a boy thing anymore.
