re: Balance, limits, and opportunity

The only way to keep arguing at this point would be to exaggerate our differences. When I suggested "no more" as a valid reason to oppose this encroachment on our liberties, I was giving my reason too. We have plenty of common ground. I don't think it's a good thing that our society is evolving a comprehensive web of both government and private surveillance. The knowledge that no matter where you go in public these days you're likely to be recorded on a surveillance camera and your passage through checkpoints recorded as you swipe a badge or your license plate is recorded when you pass through an intersection...the knowledge of surveillance in public places has a corrosive effect on the morale of a free society.

The loss of privacy and anonymity in public places has made people naturally value their core privacy at home and in their private relationships even more. When we're constantly watched in public, we need a refuge from scrutiny at home. The latest revelations that the government is now right up against the window and has its ear to the glass makes it clear that even our last refuge is under attack.

Let's go with the generalization that I'm more tolerant of government intrusions in our lives than you are. But thinking that a little more government involvement is good isn't the same as thinking that total government control would be even better. Take it to the next step and it's logical to suppose that I have my limits too.

You reached your limit long ago. I've reached my limit now.

The stars have aligned and a time of change is upon us. When you and I agree that enough is enough, we can draw a line in the sand and prevent the government from crossing it. Don't pass up the opportunity to act upon your own principles just because a Liberal happens to agree with you.
