The well-oiled Republican propaganda machine is already shifting into high gear. Look for the excuse that this database doesn't contain actual recorded phone calls, it's "merely" the records of most domestic phone calls in the US. And, those records weren't obtained directly by the government, they leaned on the phone companies to turn over the records, so the government hasn't actually done anything at all, let alone anything illegal. There's no reason to think that the government would go beyond the records to place wiretaps based on connections revealed by the data; the information was collected for no particular reason and nobody in the government would ever actually use this information for anything.
Bottom line: What's called the largest database in the world doesn't contain any useful information and the government won't actually do anything with it, it just happened, so don't worry about it, and we shouldn't worry our pretty little heads over the fact that Bush and his government absolutely lied when they denied engaging in "purely domestic" spying. It was for our own good, and I for one take comfort in the thought that Dubya knows best.
Don't you?
