I had some experiences similar to yours--my ship was homeported in Norfolk, and the anti-sailor sentiment was pretty strong, but it was not Vietnam war-related. They just didn't like the fleet there, probably for the same reasons you alluded to. In other places we stopped without a permanent base we were welcomed. In my hometown, there was a huge Air Force base but the servicemen there, unlike Norfolk, wore civvies home from work and haircut regs were a bit more liberal, so they blended in better. They were also better behaved. But I never saw any bad vibes directed to servicemen because of the war, anywhere, or even heard about it from my shipmates or classmates.
I was in the reserves after I got out so I kept my hair short and even wore my uniform to classes once a week on the way to drills. I got a lot of questions and debate, but I was never hassled. But you don't have to take my word for it, just ask everyone you know who served during the Vietnam era and ask them. I think all this babykiller, spit on the troops stuff came from post-war Hollywood movies and TV. It's that liberal media.
