I wish you could show me where all these Stalinst Left academics are, as I'd be curious to see what they are like. Having been in academic institutions my entire life, as undergrad, PhD student, and professor, I have yet to see more than a handful who could qualify -- and they were generally regarded as kooky. My own institutions have been more conservative than average, but I go to lots of conferences, I visit other departments, and I don't run into them there, either. Have they not been sending me the invites? I didn't join the right Friendster group?
Now, if you are going to count someone who strongly opposes the Iraq war, supports gay marriage, and is more likely to donate to NPR than the NRA, then sure I know lots of "leftists" on college faculties. But that's a hell of a long way from being a Stalinist fellow traveller. Heck, being a Green party member, attending protests, and advocating government run health care is still one hell of a long way from supporting the return of Stalin and Mao. I could just as easily say that "While the KKK and American Nazi parties do not represent a majority of conservatives, they are not without influence".
