There is a tendency to think you see those things you fear and feel threaten you. In the dark some see unknown shapes as being snakes, others see bears, vampires, or whatever; Tom sees "Stalinist Butt-Monkey Liberals."

Stalinist Butt-Monkey Liberals have a comparable reality to vampires. Both are literary artifacts and live only in fiction. What Ann Rice did for Vampires, the Wall Street Journal does for Tom. The big difference being that vampires live in the dark, while Tom sees Liberals surrounding him on the outside world (why he sticks on his computer posting on these boards) and lurking in academia--especially in areas of any campus where the liberal arts buildings are.

Tom's delusion is so severe he liberalism not as the legacy of Volaire, but shares the vision of such luminaries as Ann Coulter, they see liberalism as a religion. When you consider liberal derives from liber, which translates variously as "free" or "book" you can understand the religious icons neo-cons repel from. There is a great fear liberals will thwart their plans to perpetuate an aristocracy of wealth by increasing inheritance taxes--they even have gone to the tactic of renaming these as death taxes. Neo-cons fear a society based on a meritocracy. Political absolutism and religious conformity are the other two legs of their three legged stool.

The fact of the matter is that Tom is actively recruiting Stalinist Butt-Monkey Liberals with a right wing plot to subsidize them if they will accept relocation to various locations accross the country. The aim being so neo-cons wouldn't have to complain about those "left wing liberals" teaching on the university campuses accross the country; you would have their very own local liberal to focus on.
