This conservative applied to get into the Navy in 1990. I did the two day event including the physical and written test. I did all the paperwork and was ready to be shipped to boot camp. I passed everything but the vision part of the physical. Apparently they had a problem with my blind right eye.
I got my congressman to try to get me a waver to get in. He wrote a few letters, and then the military sent me to one of their eye doctors. He looked my blind eye over thoroughly. When all was said and done, the Navy stuck with “No, you can’t join.â€
I wanted to serve my country. The Gulf war was going on and I wanted to do my part. An Army recruiter tried to get me to join the Army. I told him I would love to, but I can’t pass the Vision part of the Physical. He thought he could get me in, so I went through the whole process again. I was all ready to got to boot camp, when the Army turned me down.
I tried to serve my country, twice, but my country didn’t want me.
I am 40 now, and starting to feel my age. I got a wife and kids. If I was young and single, and the military would take me, I would join up.
I have a few relatives in the military. One was in the Marians but is out now. I had a cousin in Iraq and one in Afghanistan (Who is now in Iraq.) One of my best friends just got back from Iraq. My very first girlfriend from high school, just got sent to Afghanistan’s.
Lots of Texans over there. I think our bases have sent more people than anywhere else. Everyone around here has friends or relatives over there. We worry about them, but we are proud of them- and we tell them that.
