What both parties have failed to recognize - this time to the GOP's regrets - is that the vast majority of Americans reside in the political middle ground. This time around, these Americans showed their disgust for the hypocritical right wing of the Republican Party. The election was a call for the restoration of checks and balances on political power. It wa a call for moderations and balance.
Democrats would be wise to keep these lessons in mind as they take the helm of the House and possibly the Senate. Bill Clinton won the Presidency because he took command of the moderate center. Democrats then lost the Congress in 1994 because they pandered to the left. The American public is better served when their political parties in power appeal to the kind of middle-ground voter that can vote for both Republican and Democrat candidates.
