I think the main reasons for returning to the moon, even in the long duration missions will be to do geology.

We need tunneling equipment up there!

With the reduced gravity, you could dig to enormous depths and learn 1st hand in pressurized tunnels about the different strata.

We might even find gold! (or something of even more value)
