A few times in my work I have decided it might be a good idea to have an optic made of sapphire (Sapphire has a HIGH damage threshold)- the cost for optical grade finished sapphire (A cube, essentially 1 cm on a side) was in the thousands, once it was coated....

now, how will you coat a gigantic surface with the stuff?
