Playing defense. comprehensive reply

Or is it de-fence? I don't have a horse in this race, but I'm game for a debate on this one.

How about an observatory with all the benefits of a Webb (NGST) with more of a platform for analysis of the light from the "bucket". Not just IR but up through the UV.

And what's that cylinder next to it? It's the low-angle-of-reflection lens of an x-ray telescope, currently integrating elemental spectra from asteroids. Black holes are next.

Or, if something requires repair an astro-tech can WALK (ok, hop) OVER AND FIX IT! This does assume an occasionally manned moon base, but aren't we headed in that direction anyway?

And as for targeting, all the big questions will still be there within a year for which to point to. Let Hubble pick the visible glow of a GRB if it's still there.

Think big, deep. Deeper...
