re: An excellent diplomatic reply

I am familiar with the concept of Nemesis, and am of the opinion that it may or may not exist. Irrespective of whether it does or not, we do know that the comets seem to originate in the Kuiper Belt & Oort Cloud region. SOHO has shown us that there are a lot more comets out there than we thought previously, ergo it seems like a smart idea to start getting a better map of what is out in that region, and watching to see if any are coming our way.

Besides, as we get a better map of our neighborhood we'll derive a lot of other benefits as well, such as the distribution of resources, optimized interplanetary trajectories, and gravity traces of interstellar visitors.

What about passage of the Sun through interstellar dust clouds? (The diminished insolation is thought to be a trigger for Ice Ages) Where is the evidence going to show up first? In our monitoring of the Sun, or perhaps a diminished photon response in our studies of the KBOC? That's for smarter people than me to figure out.
