I remember the first time I had an epiphany along these lines. I was a kindergartener, playing with some toys, and started thinking what if I was in a simulation and the ground was just a treadwheel that could move in any direction and the scenery around me was artificially projected. Then I realized if that was the case I've probably never actually moved anywhere my entire life and perhaps I was being watched from outside of the simulation. I put down my toy and pondered it for quite a while, until I realized that I was powerless either way, so I may as well keep doing things as I always had.
This was aproximately 1980, before Matrix, or Star Trek's Holodeck. Computers hadn't developed into anything that could approximate reality, and the closest approximations were movies. I have no idea what if anything influenced my thoughts at the time. Later when those "simulated realities" started coming forth in the movies and tv shows I kept thinking back to that first mind-blowing moment. Has anybody else had a similar experience at an early age?
