The observer need not be a human being or even a sentient creature.
It can be a photographic plate or a spectroscope. If consciousness plays a role in the universe, it is a property of the universe itself, not something we bring to it.
At some point, you have to bring faith into it, a way of interpreting your experiences when you do not have sufficient data to make unambiguous choices. My faith is that everything in the universe operates under the same rules, nothing is "special", or different, or separate. In other words, there is no super-natural.
This rules out psychic phenomena, which always seem to be about us, our God, our immortality, our luck, our love affairs and business deals. It's another way of saying "the universe is here for my benefit". On the basis of my faith alone, I just can't accept that.
