Lets take the Schroedinger's cat example- it assumes the cat doesnt qualify as an 'Observer'- sentience, at the basic level, is still just chemical interactions and reactions governed by physics... apparently, in this universe, these natural phenomenon can create beings capable of studying the universe...
maybe a universe without sentience does not really exist, who knows? Its the same as asking "If a tree falls in the forest and no one is there to hear it, did it really make a sound?"
At what point does a creature qualify as sentient? Schroedinger didnt think cats qualified as observers, and while I agree (NOT a cat fan), I am not about to try putting a cat in a box- I put a few in pet carriers and have the scars to prove it... (Though, in college, I had a cat that seemed to like travelling inside my jacket while I took it to the vet on my motorcycle) ...
