in order to function, so it is evolving it through us, or other life forms like us.

Remember the Star Trek where the Enterprise is battling an extra-galactic planet-gobbling amoeba? Spock makes the observation that the entity is an invading infection, and the Enterprise is the antibody the Galaxy has produced to combat it.
