We can thank Henry Ford for this.

Not too long ago, Americans lived close to where they worked. Then the car was invented and people started to spread out. The big cities grew wider and people drove further. Where I live, a 30 mile commute is not uncommon.

We are dependent on the car and to take it away, or make it impossible to drive, would economically cripple the backbone of this country- the working middleclass.

We have evolved into this situation for the last hundred years. I don’t think we can change it over night. I would love to go back to the quiet, small town way of life, but that will not happen.

Solutions? A public transportation campaign might help. Nuclear power with affordable electric cars might also help.

And here is an idea I came up with while driving from Houston to San Antonio a couple of weeks ago. What if we had high speed trains we could drive our cars onto? Kind of like a land ferry. You could have train cars the passengers could sit in so they wouldn’t have to sit in their cars. Getting the train loaded quickly would be one of the keys for getting people to use it.
