It wasn't that Eco, or even Robert, were wrong.

It was that they kind of filtered out something uncomfortable. Robert is still filtering.

As for the rest of your post, good ideas. But remember that experience and observation count for something, and if one set of ideas results most often in freedom and prosperity, and another set results in hellholes, conclusions may be drawn.

Call this empirical thinking if you want. Some propellant combinations will always explode no matter what your viewpoint is when you mix them.

Eventually, chemistry, physics, and atoms come into it, but they weren't essential for a lot of the history of science.

What works? What doesn't? And are the results the same every time?

The people living in East Germany had no complex philosophical questions on their situation. They could simply look over the wall and see how things work. Some nations build fences to keep people in. and some to keep people out.
