Not Kinky Friedman?

Friedmann may be a "nuclear scientist", but in the 20-odd years I've been hearing about him all I've heard him talk about is UFOs. Of course, he (and everyone who quotes him) always mentions he's a nuclear scientist. Maybe he has a degree in it. I don't know.

The reason the UFO flakes hate the SETI crowd is because they can't use against them their stock argument of "how can you be so closed minded as to deny the existence of ETI when the universe is so large and unknown, etc."

SETI people are by definition "open-minded" about ETI, so they can't be attacked that way. The fact they still dismiss the UFO phenomenon is a distinct and unanswerable threat to the cultists. The SETI people, regardless of what they may believe, or want to believe, are willing to admit they still don't know for sure and will wait for the judgement of publicly verifiable observations, not third-hand anecdotal revelations. That attitude is anathema to cults.
