The primary process is such a zoo for both parties that I wouldn't bet a dollar on any particular outcome.
Frankly, this sucks. It started becoming clear a few elections ago that there is so much luck and random happenings involved in winning the primaries that who's actually the best overall candidate seems to have damn little to do with it. Again, this applies to both parties.
It seems to me that a national primary on a single day would work, but I understand how many underlying problems there are with that.
I finally got to watch the Athens special Robert recommended a while back. For a while, they actually had citizens holding offices almost willy-nilly, kind of like my "draft the politicians" idea. In my more cynical moments, I believe a society's government starts to go downhill the minute political office becomes a profession and not something people take time out from their real lives to do.
If people have to be full-time politicians to get the work done, maybe the government is just doing too much.
