It could very well be a happy ending.

You have lots of possibilities with that basic storyline. When I look again at HG Wells' Time Machine, I wonder now if Wells made the Morlocks the monsters because they were able to run the machines.

Imagine a world where wealth creates two polar opposite groups.

The wealthy children have little in-home pods they enter for full-sensory equivalents of "second life" almost 24/7. They are the heroes of adventures and action drama, with plenty of challenges and tiered ego rewards built-in along the way to keep them hooked. As they get older they pursue "synthetic relationships" in this artificial reality. They live and many even sleep in these pods only emerging for a programmed interruption for forced nourishment and a well-needed shower.

Meanwhile the poor kids are living longer, get more exercise and have no access to such artificial realities. A vast separation is built up as they service the "pod class" and become workers tending to the ultra-rich, pod-cities. They learn things the pod-dwellers do not - especially real human interaction.

One day, a solar flare/eruption unlike any other passes the earth. Huge beyond all past measurements. Electronic equipment is uterly savaged. Even a number of people exposed on the sunlit side of the world when it hits, perish due to the wave of intense solar radiation. The electronics fail entirely as if 1000 emf pulse weapons were set off at once all over the world.

The "second life" pod-dwellers suddenly are forced out of their pods as they are all at once dark. They can barely walk straight, their vocal cords are raspy from non-use. They are completely unaccustomed to real work or interaction. They are essentially children - even if they are 60 years old.

The poor must take it upon themselves to re-educate these pod-dwellers and make them live as men and women again. The two classes merge as the pod-dwellers realize they have completely crippled themselves and find that reality is the true ultimate sensory experience.

And then they all live happily ever after...
