You'd be surprised how often I come across similar tales, or those of "Lost Mines". Thanks for putting the character into a time frame, as I wasn't sure how old the tale was.
I've a clearer idea now of the area that catches your eye, which will allow me to see if it is even a possibility, geologically speaking.
