The right gets away with this stuff all the time. They have so numbed the public about the connection between them and the Christian fundamentalists that whatever fervor erupts, goes away in a few days.
McCain over the last few years has gotten in bed with some despicable people including Jerry Falwell, John Hagee, and others and yet the stories got minimal air time. My guess is there was no conspiracy to squelch those things. It's just that it's expected out of the Republicans to bed down with the fundies.
Do a little research of your own and find out which Republicans aligned themselves with the Terry Schiavo incident. No never mind. Instead reverse that. Find out who didn't. It'd be a much shorter list. Look up the names of the congressmen that have signed on to declarations that we're a Christian nation.
If you do a bit of reading you'll find that many of the "spiritual" leaders of the right have said many more vile and reprehensible things and over a longer period of time than Wright and much of it got a day of airplay on liberal stations at the best.
Your first mistake was to take Tom at his word on a political issue.
