As I recall, the last time I made a similar proposal (remove all taxes on diesel as a sop to the trucking and rail industries) you seemed to find it well worth considering. What changed your mind?
Gasoline costs about a dollar a gallon to pump, transport and refine. The prices are high because some businessmen have a monopoly on it, because there is a cartel. If America had all the world's oil we would be screwing everybody just like the Saudis and OPEC are screwing us now. And the reason there is a monopoly now is because when fuel was plentiful the oil companies and auto industry spent billions in "Marketing" to get Americans to consume as much of it as possible: In other words, they were greedy. They do not care about the economy, inflation, unemployment, the future, national security, or old people freezing in the winter. They are collectively owned, professionally managed, international agents answerable to no one and exist for one purpose only: to feed and grow and live forever.
Your free market only works when supply greatly exceeds demand. Repeat after me:
"The purpose of the free market is not to minimize prices, it is to maximize profit."
