The one thing we must remember about the killer weed...

...is that cannabis is not addictive. I used it and enjoyed it on an almost daily basis for 15 years without it affecting my ability to function effectively in several very challenging personal and professional environments I was passing through at the time. And as far as I can tell, it had no deleterious effects on me or any of the numerous people I associated with that used it. Yes, I have old stoner friends that have succumbed to addictive behavior, but their drug of choice is now alcohol. As far as I know, both by personal experience and the studies I have read that I trust, marijuana is a totally benign weed. I will concede it may be a lung cancer risk, especially if you smoke two packs a day.

In 1985 I chose to stop using marijuana because I was going into a line of work that required frequent drug testing. My employers gave me the choice (I had informed them as to my activities) and I stopped cold turkey without any withdrawal or even any inconvenience or discomfort. I miss the buzz, but I can live without it and have done so easily for over 20 years.

On the other hand, I have been trying to quit tobacco use for over twice as long, without success. The longest I've been able to go is two years, and right now I am undergoing the agony of withdrawal after three weeks without a smoke. Any society that throws teenagers into prison for getting high while marketing, subsidizing and taxing nicotine products has got some serious hypocrisy issues to deal with.
