Current Events » in reply to Secret service

Way back when I had a Secret Service Agent for a roommate.

This was about 1979, and I had just left my wife and his had just left him. We lived in his house, 5 bedrooms, 5 baths, 3 fireplaces in a very nice neighborhood and were two miserable creatures.

Once he was responsible for security one when Mondale as VP came to Portland. At the breakfast table he was wondering whether to have a rolling shutdown of I-84 or just shut it down from the time Mondale landed until he got to his hotel.

"What the hell", he said, "if I shut it down for the whole time I can be home in time for dinner." And that's what he did.

He got me in as a visitor to watch the landing. It was impressive. Snipers on every rooftop within sight. There was a roped-off visitors area with a big guy with dark glasses out on the tarmac watching me. I was the only visitor. The plane landed chased by police cars who both led it and followed it as it slowed down. The door on the plane was thrown open even before it stopped. Bill explained later that was because at that moment the VP was the most vulnerable. Lots of fuel, confined space, big target.

Anyway, one time he volunteered he would not take a bullet for any of those "jerks". Hinted at much nefarious activity, would not tell me anything about it.

The only thing he said of a personal nature was that Pat Nixon was the loneliest person he had ever seen.
