Your fears at the end are shared by many here. A warning though to any of the wingnuts on here that might feel it would be a plus for the country to have Obama removed by whatever means. You might want to communicate this on any of the right wing blogs you frequent.
This country will go into a civil war if one of the two scenarios takes place:
1. The election is obviously stolen. I'm not talking about some voter disenfranchisement that we know is already going on. I'm talking about out and out obvious cheating. If exist polls vary from the vote by huge amounts. If there is any form of violent thuggery preventing people from getting to the polls. That sort of thing.
2. If Obama is elected and he is hurt or killed soon after, especially if there is any provable connection at all with the far right wing of the Republican Party.
I am not advocating this. I'm just a student of human nature and the raw emotion I see right now behind the Obama candidacy and the despair of many of the people caught up in it give me the feeling the country would erupt violently. This isn't like when Bobby Kennedy was shot. That was so unexpected and so shocking that the country for the most part simply went into a deep depression. There was also not the opinion, despite his growing popularity, that he was a shoe-in for the Presidency. It was way too early in the cycle.
Despite some election fears there's this tendency this time for people to have put everything into this candidacy. If that hope were to be ripped away suddenly I'm afraid of the consequences.
There's still a small chance McCain can pull this out legally and ethically but it's getting slimmer by the day. Too much is stacked against him and his running mate. I'd suggest that the conservatives begin looking out for the good of the country, take that first step towards reconciliation, and back away from the angry and hateful rhetoric we've been hearing. Instead of cranking up the vile stuff and looking for ways to sabotage the future for political gain, maybe it's time to begin talking to your comrades in elephant land and finding positive roles in the new experiment.
Just maybe your calming words might be just what it takes to prevent some real wingnut from bringing it all crashing down.
