You, at least, are smarter than this.
Energy independence? The Democrats have been fighting tooth and nail for years to keep us out of our own energy resources--offshore oil, shale, you name it. When the oil prices spiked, they were backed into a corner until the housing crisis came down like a gift from God. Now they can shut it all down again. Good luck now on nuclear power or any other realistic way of dealing with the problem.
What will happen is that billions will be pumped into massive "energy projects" which will all have three things in common:
--The projects will have deep political connections
--They won't be very effective
--None of them (kind of like mass transit) will produce more wealth than they consume
I have higher hopes for private alternative energy projects, but so far, even many of these can't sell their products without government subsidies. With luck, and new tech, that may change.
