Hundreds of facilities, cooling ponds near reactors (operational and decommissioned) all over the country, hundreds of tons of it, vulnerable to terrorist attack, natural disaster, accident, budget cuts or even a simple power failure. And we have to rely on the gummint to administer because the private sector wants no part of the problem. We're sitting on a time bomb, just moving it to some other part of the house is not a solution.
Remember, before we dispose of or warehouse the final compact waste containers, first we have to build a massive nationwide industry and infrastructure to create them by transporting, dismantling and processing thousands of tons of corroding, decades-old fuel assemblies which are still accumulating as we speak. This is not an unsolvable problem, but that don't mean it's easy.
I don't trust the private sector to do this, and so far, the government has failed miserably at it (at least, in this country).

It's already in a facility, being watched.
