REB, I never got that message from him. He's enough of a lover of science and technology that it just doesn't square that he'd write nuclear power off. My guess is this tabling of nuclear at this time is more about bang for the buck. The one part conveniently left out of the debate is the huge cost of building and running nuclear power plants.
The restriction on building plants in the last few decades wasn't a government mandate as much as it was a refusal of government to pick up the large portion of the tab. Private energy corporations could have built plants on their own but the investment is staggering and return on that investment just to break even is decades long not the few years that standard plants have. Then, just as you start making money, the reactor is reaching the end of its lifetime and must be rebuilt.
I want nuclear power to be part of our energy mix. The more diversity the better. Of course the waste issue must be solved but even that part is hugely expensive even if you can find a willing receptacle.
But, at a time when we are trying to revive the economy with goal of having the best ratio of governmental cash to the economic stimulation received, nukes probably don't meet that criteria.
