No offense, but you guys are rather dense.

High profit permits higher quality. If one has something to lose, quality goes up. If one has nothing to lose or is safe from lawsuits, one can just let patients dies on the operating table and go out for drinks while they do.

This insane deriding of the profit motive is just that - insane.

In this world, where individuals are hardly much elevated from the animal kingdom, providing a self-interested motive is the only way to get people to care.

This notion that without profit, doctors work as well, is completely and utterly asinine.

95 percent of the worlds doctors studied medicine for a PROFIT motive. They did not pay for their training with altruism and do not expect to be paid in altruism.

Turning the healthcare industry into just another service industrey where profits are small simply means the millions currently receiving quality care will receive the same quality service you get at the DMV or Post Office. I'm afraid that's just not good enough.

I want to be treated by folks who worry about lawsuits. I want to be treated by folks who still have a MOTIVATION to perfom to a certain standard.

And as I pointed out to Art, Arizona has a system vastly superior to Canada's horrible system, and in place right now where anyone who is below a certain level of income or even here illegally can receive the best healthcare the private sector has to offer - and for many, totally FREE.

And this system is supported by an industry that makes good money and good profit. Nationalize the industry and watch all these small, efficient, programs collapse.

Someone has to PAY.

Take away the profit motive and you effectively take away quality healthcare.
