I just put out the multigenerational concept in the event that even if
beings don't live for thousands of years and no means of fast star
travel are forthcoming, they might still have a way through their
descendants to cross the galaxy in person.

And of course we humans are assuming that aliens might want to do
interstellar travel and colonization in the first place.
