- thousands of years travel time, evolutionary timespans
- need to grow food, recycle waste, not enough energy to do so, no way to store energy for thousands of years
- starship is massive, not enough fuel to accelerate to solar escape velocity
- could find destination planet is uninhabitable, why travel all that way and end up living in space anyway
