But what if that one species showed up a long time ago and left?

Did you ever see this:

If these hypothetical aliens visited during the time of the dinosaurs, even if they
left something behind, would it still be around? Even the Egyptian Pyramids will
turn to dust in 125,000 years, and most other artificial objects will be gone much
sooner than that on Earth at least.

Now even if these theorized visitors left a "gift" hoping that the dinosaurs or
some other terrestrial creature would evolve into sapience, what scientist who
might come upon this object would assume it was from an alien intelligence?
Even more importantly, would he or she ever dare to tell their professional
colleagues what they think it is and what it may be from?

So yes, in one sense all it would take is one species roaming the galaxy
dropping off items on the billions of Earthlike worlds to give us that
evidence - but would the items last and would the recipients understand
its significance, or be believed?

Not many people took the idea of alien visitors to ancient Earth to begin
with, but von Daniken put the nail in the coffin for all but the most fringe
groups for that idea. And the Mars Face didn't help, either.

It would not completely surprise me if there is something most unusual
hidden away in some drawer at some archaeological institute known
only to a few people, or that something was found but was either
discarded as unimportant or deliberately destroyed.
