Yes, capitalism is partially to blame - but they can only get away with it because of all the propaganda. The reality is it's far more profitable to now push expensive fluorescent bulbs that cause eyestrain, irritation and poison the environment.
I've been a loyal customer of the 200 watts and use them in all my floor lamps so there is always enough light to read by. Walmart always gave them two spaces next to the 3-way bulbs which they also gave two spaces to. They've done this for years. Shelf space for Walmart and all the rest is a science. They were always on the very bottom - where everything they don't want you to buy, because they don't make as much profit, is placed.
The yellow, or alternatively blue, vibrating glow of the fluorescents is a subconscious irritant. It's the sort of subtle thing you do to a populace you want to drive crazy and make them irritable. Incandescent technology is healthier for people and the environment - only in an insane world can fluorescents be sold as being better for the environment and mankind.
But that is the world we live in.
