there would be no shortages if private industry were selling the meds, the price would simply rise until demand met supply. Every single person who wanted the vaccine and could afford it would have it immediately. the rest would have to do without. and i suppose that would be evidence of the efficiency of the private health system.
if the government has failed to meet its responsibility to deliver on its promises, that is evidence of incompetence, even if there are mitigating circumstances such as unexpected hold-ups among the suppliers, and it deserves to be punished for it. but to simply deny treatment to those who cannot afford it is simply blackmail. there is a difference between ineptness and extortion. the first should get you fired, the second deserves a prison sentence.
hey, don't get me wrong. i'll gladly admit i'll do everything i can to buy my way out of trouble if i have the means to do so, but i haven't got the audacity to believe i am entitled to that right just because i can afford it.
in any system, public or private, responsibilities sometimes fail to be met, and sometimes great hardships result. this is regrettable and in some cases, unavoidable, sometimes it isn't even anybody's fault. but i really feel that you want to institutionalize it, so those who are prosperous can always be guaranteed protection from misfortune at the expense of those who are not.
