Isn't the whole point of standards...

...that they ARE set by a "centralized, monolitihic" entity, and it is usually a government agency, or at least some non-profit agency without a commercial stake in any particular standard. Standards are often arbitrary (Gothgirl is right, how often SHOULD you change the oil in your car? Every time you gas up?). But the whole point of standards is to establish a consensus of sorts based on a delphic polling of relevant authorities.

I get my eyes checked once a year, should it be twice a year? It certainly wouldn't hurt, but would it be worth the expense? I get a colonoscopy every 5 years starting at age 55. Wouldn't once a year starting at age 40 save lives? It probably might, but it would also squander resources. You have to draw the line somewhere, usually arbitrarily but based on some kind of informed professional opinion, and that is what this is all about, not some sinister power grab by the commies in Washington and their panel of commie doctors. .

It may very well be that this new standard is not a good one, for medical reasons, and in that case it certainly should be challenged. But you guys are jumping all over it simply because you think it gives you ammunition against the Obama administration. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind all you conservatives would be strong supporters of this action if it had ocurred a year ago.
