The problem is...
Socialism demands that everyone has to be a socialist. It doesn't work if people get to opt out.
If Iowa decided to go communist and left the rest of us alone, nobody would really care. Until the neighboring states were full of fleeing Iowans.
There are cities out here in California that are full-blown leftist. They don't get in anyone else's way, and can survive quite happily wallowing in the hammock provided by people who actually do things for a living.
