Individual mandates were a GOP idea? There's also a big difference between creating insurance pools (there are many such already) and destroying any company that refuses to be in a pool.
The Democrats could have dealt with waste and fraud in Medicare any time after January of 2007. This isn't about medical care. It never has been.
The article is right. The GOP could not compromise because the Democrats would not accept any ideas that did not result in increased government control of the system.
