What I find amazing, Robert, is that you should still find this type of smear surprising. I first noticed it in 1964, when as a high school senior, I was amazed at the incredibly documented case against Democrats and Liberals in the John Birch Society tome "None Dare Call it Treason".
So I took the paperback to the USF library and started verifying as many of the quotes and footnotes as I could. As it turned out, many were just made up, pure fiction, others were accurate, but quoted out of context so that their meaning was 180-out. Still others although technically correct, were so heavily edited that emphasis was completely different and exaggerated.
The techniques must have been perfected over the years. Look at the "research" of Creationists and Holocaust deniers. These people have God on their side. They feel justified in doing everything they have to to get their way.
