"You can't base a successful national policy on bitterness and disillusionment."
No, Robert, but you CAN mobilize a class (or perhaps Tom might prefer the more marketing-based noun "demographic") that feels threatened by change and history or perhaps by just the normal evolution of events.
What I find troubling is the development of an all-purpose bogeyman, The Eternal Liberal, who can be blamed for all the problems of the Republic and Western Civilization. The conclusion is clear, if the Liberal wasn't plagueing us, our potential could be realized, our destiny would be achieved. The Liberal, that pathetic subhuman, decadent and corrupt race, has somehow managed to take over, seize power over the rest of us through lies and treachery, certainly not any innate talent or virtue, and is keeping us down, leading us to ruin (not to mention plundering all our loot). The Eternal Liberal has polluted the body politic, and must be removed forever.
I've seen this movie before, and I don't like the way it turns out.
