Forget which Democratic Senator said it today, but "why do they always get conservative judges, and we have to settle for right-of-center judges???" is about that kind of incrementalism too. The constant collapsing of all viewpoints to the left of far right into one shriek of "Socialism!" has the longterm effect of distorting everyone's perspective. Moderates and liberals etc. have for too long made the mistake of trying to appease the right by shifting just a little bit to the right, in the spirit of "compromise and bipartisanship". Only the right never meets us halfway, and so gradually over time the line has shifted to the point where, now, they can claim that America is a "center-right" nation...after having incrementally redefined the center for so many years. And note that "center-right" is just a transitional phase. You know they won't be satisfied with that.
