If your claim is that the soviets were really fighting the US, then your claim is false. We provided the stingers, but the actual number of successful stinger atacks was rather low, under 1,000 by some estimates. It contributed to the poor morale of the russian Air Wing, but there is a huge leap between contributing to poor morale and 'really fighting' the US.

What really screwed the Soviets militarily, BTW, were the RPG attacks that kept the Russians from moving troops outside of their main bases in the cities. The narrow mountain roads were perfect death-traps and the 'pre-taliban' rebels took full advantage. This is how most russian troops died. The stingers were great press, but lets get real. Its body count and equipment destruction that brings a fighting force to its knees.

That Reagan was president at the time was coincidental. The sale of the stinger missiles to the 'pre-taliban' was consistent with long standing policy that dates back to the Johnson/Kennedy and even before. So if idiot Carter had gotten a second term, or if mondale had won... Would you be pinning the fall of the soviets on those clowns?
