"Defining up" government benefits is what has us in the fiscal hole we have now. It is always worth remembering what the extents, purposes, and predicted costs were of such programs as Social Security and Medicare when they were first proposed. "Defining up" is the result of the oldest law of politics: no politician ever lost an election for passing money around to the electorate, but plenty have lost elections by telling the electorate they couldn't have all the goodies they wanted.
We have a system now where people can legitimately vote themselves money from the pockets their fellow citizens. Combine this with the fact that a small minority of the citizens pays most of the taxes, and that they get no more votes apiece than the vast majority of people who pay little or no taxes, and I think any reasonable person can see how this is going to end up.
Remember, the military we have now is Clintons military, and last I looked it was lean and kickin-ass all over the near-east. ;-)
Might be educational for you to discuss "Clinton's military" with anyone who has been on active duty during the past ten years. Like my brother.
