Re: Well...

That we supplied, trained and supported the rebels, I will not contest. To the tune of 3 Billion, I don't think so... Not in 1980's dollars... However, I don't have countering sources at this point so I concede that for now.

The Mujaheddin relied most on simple mines, ak-47's (which, if I recall... not sure and no source... China supplied the bulk of) and grenades. The stingers were icing on the cake.

But, as I said, arming the rebels was consistent with standing US policy. So does this make it a Reagan victory, EVEN IF that victory was brought about directly by the training and arms we supplied? My claim is no.

Frankly, I think the simple fact is that you *Can Not* subjugate a people that chooses not to be subjugated. We learned that in Vietnam and Russia learned that in A'stan. Brits learned that in India and in America. Who is right and who is wrong, I make no claims about. Just who can dominate who seems to be pretty well defined. If a group of people is willing to accept death over occupation, they can't be occupied forever.

In any case, your post requires thought and some research, which I can't do at work. So I will get to it in the next day or two.
