As much as I'd like to see an expedition to Mars in my lifetime, I think it's more important for humankind to do now what we should have been doing all along; and that would be to develop "CATS" Cheap Access To Space. If only NASA had been working as an enabler to private enterprise, I suspect we would already have had an extensive presence on Mars and elsewhere.
Just think... what if NASA had been doing what the X-Prize organization is doing, only with Billions instead of millions? I'm so impressed with all the clean-sheet designs that have been hatched because of the X-Prixe.
