The Moon enables us :
1) To travel to a shorter distance from Earth.
2) To experience radio, optical, infrared-astronomy from its surface.
3) To spend some time never to see the Earth (to prepare us psychologically to a long duration trip into the void of space, where no star, no planet can be seen for months) on farside.
4) To experience a completely alien to Earth world, without atmosphere, world that looks much more like most of the other celestial bodies of the solar system (therefore more enabling our expansion into the universe than having to rely to a world that looks too much like Earth).
5) But most importantly: by having the Earth constantly in sight, like a planet, with its phases, its discernable rotation, it will help us acquire a much better perspective (in every senses) of our own home, our origins. We went to the Moon because mankind has seen this world since the beginning.
By seeing our own Earth, from the Moon, it will help us define ourselves, rather than rely on escapism which IMHO is what Mars offers.
