"God".

Adults willingly signed that, too. And, after debate. Some wanted a reference to the deity left out, some preferred "Providence", and none of them mentioned Christianity. Probably a difference.

What's to stop little Mohammed Akhbar Ishmael from coming along and saying,

"I'm a citizen. I was born in the US, my parents are citizens, I love my country, and I love the Pledge of Allegiance. In fact, my brothers and sisters and I repeat it at home every morning before breakfast, and every evening after dinner.

And, I'm Muslim. I don't know "God". Why don't we all say "Allah", too? Not just me, we all say "God", and have everyone add "Allah" to the Pledge.

"After all, when my little butt is on the line for my country, it will be "Allah" to whom I'm praying to help me and my country, not "God".

"I love pledging allegiance to my homeland, and would rather invoke my deity than someone else's when I do it. Why can't we all do that, huh?"

What's going to happen when that gets to the Supreme Court? And then someone else comes along with their own pet name, and someone else calls for a moment of silence because they don't believe in a higher power.

Or, just leave the deity out, and let people pledge allegiance to their country.
